How to survive university

I thought for my first post of the new year I would look at how to survive university. Students all around the country are currently looking at what university they should go to and sending in their applications. So let’s give them a heads up!

 Make friends.

Everyone makes friends so easily at uni, its the atmosphere. However if you sit in your room, not talking to any one and counting down the days you can go back to family or your other half, your unlikley to do very well. Your friends will help you out when your stressed with work, need advice and take you out when you want to be boring.

Be organized.

The worst thing would be if you realized you 5,000 word essay was due in tomorrow, or worse last week. Keep a diary, where you have written all you deadlines, presentations, and exams. I missed one of mine in the first year due to remembering it wrong.

 Go out.

I am not a huge night clubber, I would prefer to have good night in with a bottle of vodka and a group of friends. I think in the first year you need to go on nights out, because half of my memories are from funny things that happen on nights out.

 Learn how to reference.

One of the things that I think EVERY student needs to learn as soon as possible, is how to reference. In my house I am the Queen of referencing and my housemates are always asking me advice. However when I was in my first year, I failed loads of my assignments because I didnt reference properly. Does your university do Harvard Referencing?

Don’t forget the people at home.

For me this is one of the biggest mistakes you can make, your friends from school, college or wherever should stay your friends when your at university and unfortunately it is far too easy to leave them behind.

 Don’t Stress.

As long as your putting effort into your course work, making friends and having fun then you are doing uni right. Don’t worry too much about how high your grades are, in your first year it really doesn’t matter.

My transition: Going from blonde to brunette

Since I was a child I have been blonde as I started to get older, my hair started to get darker. So with a little help from my hairdresser I managed to keep the wonderful hair colour I had grown up with.

Image

Me as a child!

However over the last year-or-so I have become bored with the blonde hair, I have felt like it was beginning to look a little drab and boring. A few weeks ago I died my hair at home at the time I thought it looked great but over time I began to think it was looking worse and worse.

I have always loved the idea of being a brunette. Brown hair epitomizes everything my hair isn’t thick, curly and dark, in my head at least.

If you have read my blog before, you may know that I got a set of hair extensions earlier in the year which, obviously matched my hair. So if I change my hair colour, they will no longer match.

Last weekend as Cinderella

nde,

However at the beginning of last week I finally decided to jump into it and I decide to use the boots wash-in wash-out hair dye in chocolate brown. However after putting a load on my hair and washing it out, it turned out a lovely orangey- pink colour (not so great)

So I went to the hairdressers and booked the appointment to go from blonde to brunette, properly. Thursday afternoon I turned up at the hairdressers and let them work there magic on me. After a couple of hours in the hairdressers I pretty much skipped home swishing my beautiful new brunette hair. So I suppose I should show you what it looks like now!

My new hair!!

Although it was very different from the blonde hair I am used to, I am in love with my new hair, although I am still surprised every time I look in the mirror!

How to save money with Facebook

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post about using Facebook to organize your university household. Well today I am bringing you a blog post about how to save money using Facebook. Who knew social media could be so useful?

  1. 10 ways to have more money as a student, without working.

Ok, this page might have a super long name (it’s always shortened to 10 ways) but they are amazing! Yesterday they put up offers for Vodka, 3D TV, Earrings, Sweets and (umm) Female toys.

One of the things you need to remember about 10 ways is they use fake names for some of the popular supermarkets (i.e. Tesco becomes Tosco) this means that they don’t find out any glitches quiet as quickly. The glitches and savings they find don’t always work but when they do they are amazing. Just try not to spend too much money on stuff you don’t need!

2.Follow the brands you like.

Most brands like to reward their loyal customers and this is the same with the customers who follow their social media pages.

They will often host giveaways or provide coupons for their followers that wont be given anywhere else. Easy way to get money off your favorite products with very little work.

3.Local free stuff

One of the great things about Facebook being one of the biggest social media pages is that you can find things locally. So search for free and your area in the group section and you will often find people who want to get rid of furniture or used items and all you need to do is go and collect it.

4.Extreme Couponing UK

Couponing is a big business in America and now it has hopped across the pond and come over here and the ladies (Why are they all ladies?) over at Extreme Couponing UK provide amazing coupon details. Including where to find the best coupons, who are the best companies to write to and get coupons from.

You have to be more organised to be a coupon-er but it could save you loads of money. We have all heard of the American’s doing thousand dollars of shopping for a few bucks.

5.Giveaways

People all over social media do giveaways (is this a good time to say i’ll have one soon!). Weather it is a blog, company or band, keep an eye out for their giveaways. They are free to enter (normally) and you never know what you could win.

A disney 21st birthday- at uni

This weekend my housemate celebrated her twenty-first birthday with a disney themed party at our house, so I thought I would share it with you.

Image

Everybody at the party showed up in a disney themed costume and there was everything from Disney Princesses, Simba and a Crocodile. It was great fun seeing how everyone had dressed up.

I went as Cinderella in a blue dress (ASOS-no longer available), blue sparkly headband (Market), blue sparkley shoes (Karen Millen-no longer available) and the birthday girl got an amazing gold dress from ebay for her Belle costume (beauty and the Beast) She brought a gold tiara and tied the shawl that came with the dress to create new sleeves.

On the day of the party I baked a Red Velvet cake and decorated it, very badly, with white icing, flowers and piped icing that said ‘Once upon a time, Abi 21.’ We also provided crisps, pizza and onion rings through the night.

Everyone partied until the early hours and abi had a great time so that’s all that matters!

What I love: October!!

I thought I would be fun to do an October favouritesImage, as it is now November! This month I have brought a lot of things for university and my new home so here we go!

Candle

A few weeks before I went away to university, my mother and I went to a day spa, while I was there I brought a Yankee Candle. I have wanted one for years and with a damp and slightly smelly room I thought I finally deserve my candle. So I brought the ‘A Child’s Wishes’ Candle. It is an amazing smell, it is a spring smell really, with the smell of a spring morning in my opinion. Apparently it’s meant to make it feel like a child playing in the garden.

Hair curling

I went to a wedding in september and ended up borrowing my sister-in-law’s hair curlers because mine were rubbish. After using them I decided to run out and buy some for myself. The BaByliss 2287BU Pro Curl 210 Styling Hair Tongs, have a number of different heat settings and create a really nice curl!

Red Lipstick

I have been in love with red lipstick over the past couple of weeks and brought a few different types of lipsticks. I got the Max Factor Color Elixer in Ruby Tuesday. It is such an a amazing true red color and looks great on.

Essay research

Every time I am researching for essays, including my dissertation, I begin by looking at Google Scholar and Google books. They provide you with loads of Journals and books for every subject and they also give you all the information you need for referencing! PERFECT!!!

Primark!

So, I am a student so this has to be on here. I am in love with primark, especially in the lead up to both Halloween and a fancy dress part this weekend! They have great onsies, lovely outfits and accessories. Primark you are taking all my money!!

Extentions

I have talked about my extensions before on here and I am still in love with them.

I wore them on a night out with my friends and I loved having long curly hair! Going to wear them to a number of parties over the next few weeks.

I hope you had a great October and looking forward to November!

The Zara City Bag

When I was trying to work out what to ask for as a Birthday Present this year (end of April). I was trawling the internet looking for inspiration when I saw a youtube video about this bag, and it looked perfect. Since I was in about year 10 at school, I have used hundreds of different bags to carry my school/college/university books around in, and they all break really quickly!

My requirements for this bag where that they could hold a lot of stuff, I carry university books, notebooks, folders and want something I could take home for the weekend. It also needed to be stylish, I wanted to carry it around at university without looking sloppy.

Image

The city bag from Zara

The bag has five main sections, all about the same size. 3 of them are zip fastened and two just have large magnetic poppers. The two sections with poppers also have some organizational stuff within them. The first has a section for your phone, a section for 5 cards and a small zipped area, I tend to use this as the ‘handbag area’ to keep my keys, purse and phone in them. The other section has a padded zipped area within in perfect for holding a tablet.

The two outside zipped areas are just normal large sized pouches, which are perfect for folders, notebooks ect. The middle zipped up area is padded all around so you can store a laptop in it. The padding is actually quiet thick so your laptop won’t get hurt and as it’s in the middle it would be knocked is you hit the bag against something or if you drop it.

The bag looks really stylish with the plain black textured material, gold zips, poppers and the metal sections on the handles. Inside of the bag is lined with a dark sort of aubergine purple. The lining also goes all around the main pockets with the exception of the ‘handbag section’ which has black leather look sections.

The inside

The inside

Over all I really like this bag and holds loads, in fact more that I would every want to carry. The lining really gives the bag a sophisticated look and stands up to everything I have put it through.

The only bad thing I can find is that the zips don’t close seamlessly, they quiet often get stuck at some point along the zip. They always do close however it does take a lot of fiddling, I have heard some other bag owners say that have similar problems, so I don’t just have a dodgy one.

If they could sort the zip out this bag would be perfect, as it is it’s average and I will use it. However It does make it use slightly harder.

Hope your all well!

Lauren.

July Favorites

I thought I would do a series of monthly favorites, so at the end of every month I will write a blog post about what I loved that month; From makeup, Food, university and many more things!

Make-up

Estaee lauder double wear foundation- I have been in love with this foundation over the last couple of months actually. Although the foundation is expensive, you only need a little amount and it stays in place all day. I have used the concealer for a while now and after battling with makeup that has disappeared by mid-day this is a brilliant product.

Dream Matt Mouse Blusher- I love this stuff! I have dry skin so using a cream blush means that my skin looks dewy rather than dry. They have a beautiful soft pink that makes my pale skin look slightly flushed.

Food

You may know that at the begining of the summer I had to go gluten free as I discovered I have a Gluten intolerance, so it has been really hard finding food I can still eat and enjoy.

Gluten Free Snack- Tesco Free From Chocolate Sponge Cake. Ok, so this isn’t healthy at all, and I am not saying that I eat it everyday. In fact one cake has lasted over a month in an air tight container. However after being restricted by my health, it’s really nice to have a cheat meal which is actually still good for me.

General Snack- Metacalf’s Skinny Topcorn in Sweet ‘n Salt. I got these for the first time in one of my Cosmopolitan Gift bags, and to be honest I thought it was a stupid idea, why would i want sweet and Salty in one bag? However the Salt makes the sweet popcorn sweeter and somehow means you don’t get bored. It’s also only 115 Calories.

Favorite restaurant- I am in love with Giraffe at the moment. All the staff there are mega friendly and can’t do enough for you and the food is amazing. If you’re gluten free they have a menu for you and they can try and re-create any of the normal menu in a gluten free way.

University.

Book- Dummies guide to writing your dissertation. I am starting to write my dissertation and this book has been really useful giving me advice on everything from research to what to put in your acknowledgments.

University store- WH Smiths. They have some amazing ranges in at the moment with lovely looking notebooks, folders ect. I have always found that nice looking work things will make me work better.

Home Store- Dunelm Mill has always been my top favorite store for buying home goods. It is where I got all of my things when I originally moved to university. However I have also found that Supermarkets like Tesco and Asda have some great deals.

What have you loved this month?

Lauren.

p.s. Sorry I’ve been MIA; I have been working two jobs which is a mega busy deal! I am trying to come back and have a number of new ideas. x
