Third year: Term One.

Well 2013 is almost over, which means that so is the first term of my final year at university, that seems very strange to say.

I can’t believe that I am already in my second year, I still feel like I am finding my way around university and I am defiantly not cleaver enough to be un my final year. However I am and in 6 months I will be standing up on the stage dressed in my cap and gown receiving my diploma, or at least I hope I will be.

If I had to use one word to describe this year it would be: Difficult. Whenever you talk to adults about university, they are always so impressed, talk about how it takes a lot of brains and how you have to be very organized. Well I have always felt like a fraud, uni life is a lot more having fun than it is studying. Last year I would get home, get back into bed with my boyfriend and watch TV (but don’t tell my parents!)

This year however, the weeks I don’t have hand-ins I feel like I need to be working on future assignments, the weeks I do have assignments, I don’t cook, don’t go out, in fact i pretty much only work on my assignments. Hopefully the second term will be a little easier, but i would be shocked if it was.

I am not trying to scare anyone, when I started this, at the end of my first year, it was to give an accurate indication of what people should expect at university, and that is what I hope to achieve.

I should also note, I am a slight worrier, and I don’t have my boyfriend to calm me down when things get rough, unfortunately.

Hope you all had a great christmas, I will have another post tomorrow.

July Favorites

I thought I would do a series of monthly favorites, so at the end of every month I will write a blog post about what I loved that month; From makeup, Food, university and many more things!

Make-up

Estaee lauder double wear foundation- I have been in love with this foundation over the last couple of months actually. Although the foundation is expensive, you only need a little amount and it stays in place all day. I have used the concealer for a while now and after battling with makeup that has disappeared by mid-day this is a brilliant product.

Dream Matt Mouse Blusher- I love this stuff! I have dry skin so using a cream blush means that my skin looks dewy rather than dry. They have a beautiful soft pink that makes my pale skin look slightly flushed.

Food

You may know that at the begining of the summer I had to go gluten free as I discovered I have a Gluten intolerance, so it has been really hard finding food I can still eat and enjoy.

Gluten Free Snack- Tesco Free From Chocolate Sponge Cake. Ok, so this isn’t healthy at all, and I am not saying that I eat it everyday. In fact one cake has lasted over a month in an air tight container. However after being restricted by my health, it’s really nice to have a cheat meal which is actually still good for me.

General Snack- Metacalf’s Skinny Topcorn in Sweet ‘n Salt. I got these for the first time in one of my Cosmopolitan Gift bags, and to be honest I thought it was a stupid idea, why would i want sweet and Salty in one bag? However the Salt makes the sweet popcorn sweeter and somehow means you don’t get bored. It’s also only 115 Calories.

Favorite restaurant- I am in love with Giraffe at the moment. All the staff there are mega friendly and can’t do enough for you and the food is amazing. If you’re gluten free they have a menu for you and they can try and re-create any of the normal menu in a gluten free way.

University.

Book- Dummies guide to writing your dissertation. I am starting to write my dissertation and this book has been really useful giving me advice on everything from research to what to put in your acknowledgments.

University store- WH Smiths. They have some amazing ranges in at the moment with lovely looking notebooks, folders ect. I have always found that nice looking work things will make me work better.

Home Store- Dunelm Mill has always been my top favorite store for buying home goods. It is where I got all of my things when I originally moved to university. However I have also found that Supermarkets like Tesco and Asda have some great deals.

What have you loved this month?

Lauren.

p.s. Sorry I’ve been MIA; I have been working two jobs which is a mega busy deal! I am trying to come back and have a number of new ideas. x

The Stress of Exams

Image

Me at university- Stressed!

Over the last few weeks my Facebook timeline has been filled with desperate posts about revising and sitting exams, everyone hoping to get into university. Every time I read one of these posts it takes me back to when I was sitting my exams.

I have never been academically smart, I have struggled by being a solid C student. While my friends managed to walk into an exam, without revision. “I looked through my notes this morning.” was a phrase I heard too many times, followed a few months later by a soul killing “Oh, I got an A.”

At aged 7 my English teacher and tutor diagnosed me with Dyslexia, I struggled with my writing, often merging 3 words together, and always adding an ‘E’ where it wasn’t needed. However in my following schools they dismissed the idea, saying I was boarder line but it wasn’t serious enough to give me any additional house.

While I sat my A-levels and GCSE’s the pressure got too much for me, I constantly stressed about not doing enough revision or that I would suddenly forget everything when I got into the exam. I swear it actually did!

However after all my stressing, my worrying, emotional breakdowns and moody attitude. I got into university. Looking back over my school years I am amazed. I went from the girl at bottom of the class, who had been told she had Dyslexia to the person I am today, studying Journalism, getting firsts in my coursework and doing really well.

What’s the point of the post. Although your exams are important and you want to do your best. Don’t stress out about it, In my case I don’t think I got the right grades but my chosen university sit let me in any.

Trust me, everything will work out perfectly!

Why is everyone growing up?

Think I'll stick to uni!

Think I’ll stick to uni!

I am honestly not sure what is going on with society at the moment; maybe I have just got that age in my life, but everyone is settling down.

Over the past few months I have heard about breakups because there was “no future”, all my class mates from school seem to be having babies or getting married, and I am attending the wedding of a 21 year old couple in a few months. I have barely finished my teenage years and people around me are already getting on with adulthood. When did this happen?

When you’re at university you sort of become stuck in time. You don’t feel like you are getting older, you are still in education and you tend to have a strange day pattern. 12 pm mornings and 4 am bedtime ring a bell?

However while we are stuck in a life without responsibilities, having fun every night and sleeping in everyday. Friends who haven’t gone into further education have started their adult lives. They work 9-5, and possibly have done for a number of years, they are earning a regular income and their relationships seem to be more meaningful.

If I hadn’t have gone away to university would I be engaged? Pregnant? and living with my boyfriend?

I know for me since I have started university my life has changed so much. I have fallen in love, met some amazing people and learnt some great new things about myself. But with all of these people around me starting their lives with families am I missing out?

Do you think friends who haven’t gone to uni got more serious in their personal life?

Cosmopolitan Career Blog Masterclass

Well I am back again talking about Cosmo, I promise this is the last time!

The Cosmo cannel: Louise (Editor) Pat (Cosmo online) Emily (Fashion Foigras blogger) Kat (RocknRoll Bride Blogger) Andreas (Greenlight Digital) Vicki (social media for next) Dominic (Gleam Digital)

Me and my university friend and fellow blogger Jess (Her fashion blog) both hopped on a train and headed to the big lights of London town, again. Regular readers of my blog will remember me talking about going to a Cosmo event last month. This time it was looking at all wonderful things blogging, how to gain more readers, monetizing and creating a business from blogging.

The last blogger event was filled with some very overdressed media hungry people, so I thought this one would be filled with some mega overdressed fashion and beauty bloggers. I decided to wear my faux leather a-line skirt (can’t remember where from!) and my pink armless shirt with lace detailing (Next) which I tied at my waist. It turns out there were not loads of over dressed people this time!

The two bloggers on the panel were Emily from Fashion foiegras and Kat from Rock and Roll Bride. They were both great and really made me think about my long term goals for this blog and how I can get to making them a reality.

Kat talked about making sure you are consistent throughout all of your social media platforms, using the same bio and profile picture so people can recognise you without seeing your name.

Can you believe that Emily used to post 10 blog posts a day while still holding down a 12 hour PR managers job. How did she survive??? I have decided though that I will be posting on a regular basis now. This will not be a daily post because, to be honest, that’s far too much! I am going to try to post 3 times a week, starting from next week obviously. 😀

On the way home from London, Jess and I started talking about ideas to collaborate together. So, I hope you look out for that.

Uni Confessions:

-I have 2 PR jobs over the summer (Busy bee, me)

-This is my last cosmo blog post for a while!

-I am still struggling to eat gluten free!

The Big V

Well, It’s that time of year again. The time when singletons are made to feel pathetic and Couples are forced to buy gifts, Yes Valentines day!

Image

I have to admit I have a love/ hate relationship with Valentines day. I have fond memories of being at school and people passing around cards, and I love an excuse to go out and do something special with my boyfriend. But I also feel like doing something special on one day because your told your meant to is no where near as special as just randomly celebrating you love with each other. And do you want to know my biggest hate of all?

Every restaurant known to man, will have the tiniest menu at prices triple the normal value, and there restaurant will be packed, making your romantic night feel slightly less romantic as you can hear the people next to you talking. So I have tried to come up with some ideas of how to celebrate without needing a new student loan!

  1. Why Thursday?

Unless you have a real attachment to February 14th there is no need to actually stick to that day. Like I said earlier the prices of food and drink are raised on Valentines day, so why not go out on the Wednesday, or even the week after. You will still have a great night out but the likelihood is you will have a larger menu to choose from and it will be cheaper.

  1. Cook.

I know cooking can seem super boring but if you and your lover (that word makes me cringe!) work together to create a meal, it can be great fun as well as really tasty. You will also be saving loads of money, although you will have to face the washing up!

  1. Takeaway

If your a good student who doens’t eat takeaways very often (or not.) this can be a nice treat. Last year my boyfriend and I had a lovely night watching a film and eating from our favorite takeaway.

  1. Meals for 2

I swear every supermarket does those dine for 2 people deals nowadays. You normally get a main course, side dish, pudding and a bottle of wine. They tend to be £5-£10, you normally can just whack them in the oven, or microwave and they do all the work on their own. I admit I have had a few of the tesco’s ones and they are devine!

  1. Cinema

My final idea is pretty simple don’t go out for a meal, why not just go to the cinema or another date night favorite. It will be loads cheaper.

  1. One extra!

My boyfriend and I have decided no presents, it is likely to save us both a fair amount and we don’t have loads to through around at the moment.

I hope you enjoy Valentines day weather your single or coupled up!
