Getting into PR by Sarah Stimson

Many of you know, I am now a third year student who is studying Journalism and Media and Communications. As a third year I am faced with the daunting task of trying to find a job, within Public Relations, for next year. This is a task I have found both over-whelming and confusing at times, so when tutor told me about a new book all about getting a job within PR I jumped at the chance to read it.

How to get a job in PR is written by Sarah Stimson, who has worked within recruitment and training for over a decade and now works with the Taylor Bennett Foundation. If anyone knows how to get into the PR industry it’s her.

The book consist of 37 short chapter, including what is PR, Using social media to get a job and the 25 don’ts of PR. The book goes over the basic information perfect for people just learning, or looking to learn about Public Relations and goes onto to talk about getting a job and how to ask for a pay rise for people looking to work in PR. It even looks at taking a career break and how to resign for when you have managed to get your job.

The layout of the book makes it easy to read all in one go or to quickly look up information of interest. Each chapter has an explanation by Sarah along with a number of industry professionals giving their thoughts on each of the topics, meaning that you can hear what the professionals real think, and make your own mind up.

The wonderfully funny and conversational tone of the book makes reading it easy and enjoyable. Where else can you read “If you want you parents to proudly declare, “my daughter is a PR consultant” and for the rest of the dinner table to go ‘Oooo’ my son wanted to ho into PR but settled for being a vet instead, then your going to be sorely disappointed.”

This book has already helped me concentrate on what I need to do to get a job next year, and what sector I want it to be in. I can see this easily being my PR job bible for the next few months and even once I have a job. I would recommend this book to anyone who is hoping to get into the PR industry or is studying PR.

This book was kindly gifted to me by Sarah for an honest view, Thank you to Sarah and everyone involved in this book for finally giving PR students a helping hand to get into the industry.

You can buy the book from amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GX9DXVA/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_img

How to survive a long distance relationship- at uni.

When I came to university in my first year, in fact in my first week, I met a guy and very quickly we started dating. This was great, however when the holidays came we were nearly 100 miles apart. This year he has taken a year in work, while I am in my final year at university, this means we are no longer together at uni either.

My long distance relationship- When we first met!

So I thought I would share my tips on how to survive a long distance relationship.

1. Do things together.

I know this seems stupid, your miles apart and you can’t do things together, but you can. Watch one of your favorite tv shows while on the phone to each other. Being able to watch something at the same time, and talk about what is going on makes it feel more like you are together.

2. Make sure you have a plan.

This one comes from my housemate, Abi, and I 100% agree with her. Make sure you have a plan of when you can next see each other. If you know that its only 3 weeks until you can be together again it makes saying goodbye all that much easier.

3. Do something special.

Whenever my boyfriend and I get together we try and make it special so we will go out for a meal or go on a date night. It means that you have a memory of the time you spent together rather than spending your precious time just sat in your bedroom.

4. Talk.

Talk about everything, have you had a bad day? Do you miss each other? The simple things like that can be wonderful to hear when your apart but you also need to talk about the difficult things. How will the relationship work long distance? Are you struggling or always arguing? You need to confide in each other.

5. Skype.

If your boyfriend doesn’t live in the middle of no-where with shockingly bad internet conenction then you may want to download Skype. The Video software allows you to see and talk to each other with the use of your webcams. I have known couples who talk to each other via Skype while doing uni work or on in the background for long periods of time.

6. 101 Questions

When you run out of things to say, this happens when everyday is ‘wrote more of my essay’ then ask each other questions. This website has 100 questions to ask each other http://www.everydaybetterliving.com/love_danger_signs/100_questions.html   great for when you cant think of what to say, and you could learn more about your relationship.

7.Gifts.

This isn’t something you have to do by any stretch of the imagination, but imagine if you were stressed about your assignment and a bunch of flowers turned up at your door. Or even a pizza!!

One of my friends has a boyfriend who will read through her work, make her dinner and look after her when she is stressed. This is harder when you are far apart but a little token to show you care can mean all the difference.

8. Make good friends.

I know you expected all of this list to be about your partner but some of the best ways to survive a long distance relationship is to have amazing friends. You need people who you can go to when your upset, angry or just a bit frustrated with life. Your friends will help you become happy and excited about the smallest things. My friends are amazing and we help each other through every stress and strain of a LDR.

9.Let your self be upset.

It’s ok to become upset by the little things. On the second night of freshers this year I ended up in floods of tears for the whole night for no reason what so ever apart from that I was getting used to uni without him. The next day I was fine!

10. Just relax.

Although being in a long distance relationship can be difficult and I don’t think that you should go into it lightly without talking through your parameters and thoughts behind your relationship. When your in the relationship you need to relax a little. Don’t panic over every little thing, if your meant to be together you will be, if not then you know it.

Are you in a long distance relationship?   What are your tips for coping.

My transition: Going from blonde to brunette

Since I was a child I have been blonde as I started to get older, my hair started to get darker. So with a little help from my hairdresser I managed to keep the wonderful hair colour I had grown up with.

Image

Me as a child!

However over the last year-or-so I have become bored with the blonde hair, I have felt like it was beginning to look a little drab and boring. A few weeks ago I died my hair at home at the time I thought it looked great but over time I began to think it was looking worse and worse.

I have always loved the idea of being a brunette. Brown hair epitomizes everything my hair isn’t thick, curly and dark, in my head at least.

If you have read my blog before, you may know that I got a set of hair extensions earlier in the year which, obviously matched my hair. So if I change my hair colour, they will no longer match.

Last weekend as Cinderella

nde,

However at the beginning of last week I finally decided to jump into it and I decide to use the boots wash-in wash-out hair dye in chocolate brown. However after putting a load on my hair and washing it out, it turned out a lovely orangey- pink colour (not so great)

So I went to the hairdressers and booked the appointment to go from blonde to brunette, properly. Thursday afternoon I turned up at the hairdressers and let them work there magic on me. After a couple of hours in the hairdressers I pretty much skipped home swishing my beautiful new brunette hair. So I suppose I should show you what it looks like now!

My new hair!!

Although it was very different from the blonde hair I am used to, I am in love with my new hair, although I am still surprised every time I look in the mirror!

How to save money with Facebook

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post about using Facebook to organize your university household. Well today I am bringing you a blog post about how to save money using Facebook. Who knew social media could be so useful?

  1. 10 ways to have more money as a student, without working.

Ok, this page might have a super long name (it’s always shortened to 10 ways) but they are amazing! Yesterday they put up offers for Vodka, 3D TV, Earrings, Sweets and (umm) Female toys.

One of the things you need to remember about 10 ways is they use fake names for some of the popular supermarkets (i.e. Tesco becomes Tosco) this means that they don’t find out any glitches quiet as quickly. The glitches and savings they find don’t always work but when they do they are amazing. Just try not to spend too much money on stuff you don’t need!

2.Follow the brands you like.

Most brands like to reward their loyal customers and this is the same with the customers who follow their social media pages.

They will often host giveaways or provide coupons for their followers that wont be given anywhere else. Easy way to get money off your favorite products with very little work.

3.Local free stuff

One of the great things about Facebook being one of the biggest social media pages is that you can find things locally. So search for free and your area in the group section and you will often find people who want to get rid of furniture or used items and all you need to do is go and collect it.

4.Extreme Couponing UK

Couponing is a big business in America and now it has hopped across the pond and come over here and the ladies (Why are they all ladies?) over at Extreme Couponing UK provide amazing coupon details. Including where to find the best coupons, who are the best companies to write to and get coupons from.

You have to be more organised to be a coupon-er but it could save you loads of money. We have all heard of the American’s doing thousand dollars of shopping for a few bucks.

5.Giveaways

People all over social media do giveaways (is this a good time to say i’ll have one soon!). Weather it is a blog, company or band, keep an eye out for their giveaways. They are free to enter (normally) and you never know what you could win.

A disney 21st birthday- at uni

This weekend my housemate celebrated her twenty-first birthday with a disney themed party at our house, so I thought I would share it with you.

Image

Everybody at the party showed up in a disney themed costume and there was everything from Disney Princesses, Simba and a Crocodile. It was great fun seeing how everyone had dressed up.

I went as Cinderella in a blue dress (ASOS-no longer available), blue sparkly headband (Market), blue sparkley shoes (Karen Millen-no longer available) and the birthday girl got an amazing gold dress from ebay for her Belle costume (beauty and the Beast) She brought a gold tiara and tied the shawl that came with the dress to create new sleeves.

ImageImage

On the day of the party I baked a Red Velvet cake and decorated it, very badly, with white icing, flowers and piped icing that said ‘Once upon a time, Abi 21.’ We also provided crisps, pizza and onion rings through the night.

Everyone partied until the early hours and abi had a great time so that’s all that matters!

What I love: October!!

I thought I would be fun to do an October favouritesImage, as it is now November! This month I have brought a lot of things for university and my new home so here we go!

Candle

A few weeks before I went away to university, my mother and I went to a day spa, while I was there I brought a Yankee Candle. I have wanted one for years and with a damp and slightly smelly room I thought I finally deserve my candle. So I brought the ‘A Child’s Wishes’ Candle. It is an amazing smell, it is a spring smell really, with the smell of a spring morning in my opinion. Apparently it’s meant to make it feel like a child playing in the garden.

Hair curling

I went to a wedding in september and ended up borrowing my sister-in-law’s hair curlers because mine were rubbish. After using them I decided to run out and buy some for myself. The BaByliss 2287BU Pro Curl 210 Styling Hair Tongs, have a number of different heat settings and create a really nice curl!

Red Lipstick

I have been in love with red lipstick over the past couple of weeks and brought a few different types of lipsticks. I got the Max Factor Color Elixer in Ruby Tuesday. It is such an a amazing true red color and looks great on.

Essay research

Every time I am researching for essays, including my dissertation, I begin by looking at Google Scholar and Google books. They provide you with loads of Journals and books for every subject and they also give you all the information you need for referencing! PERFECT!!!

Primark!

So, I am a student so this has to be on here. I am in love with primark, especially in the lead up to both Halloween and a fancy dress part this weekend! They have great onsies, lovely outfits and accessories. Primark you are taking all my money!!

Extentions

I have talked about my extensions before on here and I am still in love with them.

I wore them on a night out with my friends and I loved having long curly hair! Going to wear them to a number of parties over the next few weeks.

I hope you had a great October and looking forward to November!
